What are the best divided plates and bento boxes when food can't touch?

For meals at home, divided plates with raised walls are the simplest answer: ARK's Divided Section Plate (about £10.99) has three sections. For packed lunches, bento boxes with a sealed lid, such as the Yumbox Original (under £30), keep six portions apart without leaking. Joseph Joseph's GoEat pot and Sistema KLIP IT tubs cover soup and batch cooking.

    ARK's Divided Section Plate

Original Leakproof Bento Lunch Box, 6 Compartments

Some people eat happily as long as nothing on the plate touches. Others need the same plate every time. The kit for that is cheap and simple, but a few details decide whether it works: how high the walls are, whether the lid seals each section, and what happens when it goes in the microwave or the dishwasher.

What to look for in divided plates and bento boxes

Look at wall height, section count, how the lid seals, capacity and washing. In that order, because a pretty box that leaks is useless.

  • Wall height and plate size. Raised walls stop gravy creeping across. ARK's plate is about 20cm across and about 2cm deep, which holds beans and sauce but not soup. If you eat a lot of wet food, a deeper tub is a better answer than a plate.
  • Number of sections. Plates usually have three: main, side and veg. Bento boxes go to five or six. More sections means smaller portions, so check sizes. Yumbox's main compartments are half a cup each.
  • A seal on every section. This is the one that matters in a bag. A lid that clips over the top keeps food inside the box. A lid lined with silicone that presses down on each compartment keeps food apart inside the box. The Yumbox has the second kind.
  • Capacity in millilitres. For soup and stew, look for a number. The GoEat pot holds 600ml in the base and 300ml in the top pot, per Joseph Joseph.
  • Microwave and dishwasher. Many divided plates are not microwave safe. ARK says its plate is not recommended for the microwave. Yumbox says its box is top-rack dishwasher safe up to 65°C, with hand-washing advised for the lid.
  • Materials named. A good listing tells you the plastic. ARK uses food-grade polypropylene and says the plate is free from BPA, phthalates, PVC, lead and latex. Yumbox uses ABS for the outer box, Tritan for the tray and silicone for the seal.
  • A latch that small hands can open. For children, this decides whether lunch gets eaten. Yumbox says its latch is built for little hands to open on their own.

Plate or lunch box: which do you need?

If the difficulty is at the table, buy a plate; if it is in a bag, buy a box that seals each section.

A divided plate stops foods meeting while you eat, and costs about £10.99. It does nothing once food is tipped into a bag. A bento box whose lid only rests on top will let a wet section seep into its neighbour as the bag swings, which is the exact thing you were trying to avoid.

Some people use both: the same plate at home, and a box laid out the same way for work or school, so lunch looks like tea. The National Autistic Society notes that many autistic people may need to always use the same plate or cutlery. If that is you or your child, buy two of whatever works now. Colours and ranges change, and a replacement that is nearly the same is not the same.

Separate tubs are the low-tech option. Four Sistema tubs cost about half the price of one Yumbox and keep foods apart completely. The trade-off is more lids, more washing and more room in the bag.

How do you keep a packed lunch safe to eat?

Sections keep food apart, but only cold keeps it safe: the Food Standards Agency advises frozen ice packs and a cool bag.

The FSA's heatwave advice is to throw away perishables that have been out of the fridge for more than two hours in hotter than usual weather. Foods it lists as needing to stay cool include anything with a use-by date, cooked dishes, prepared salads and sandwiches, pre-packed cut fruit and vegetables, dairy, and ready-to-eat foods such as dips.

A Yumbox is a plastic box. Nothing on the Yumbox page describes it as insulated, so for anything perishable it needs a cool bag and an ice pack around it. The same goes for the GoEat pot: it seals well, but a sealed pot of warm soup is not the same as a hot one by lunchtime. For food that should arrive hot, use an insulated flask: the Thermos Stainless King holds 470ml, and its listing says it keeps food hot for up to 9 hours.

If you batch cook into tubs, the FSA says your fridge should be between 0 and 5°C. Eat leftovers within 48 hours, or freeze them if you think that won't happen. Label the lid with the date. Future you will not remember.

Divided plates and lunch boxes for children

For a child, the latch and the portion size matter as much as the seal. Practise opening and closing the box at home before the first school day. A lid that is too stiff at 12.15 in a busy hall means an uneaten lunch.

Half-cup Yumbox compartments suit younger children. Older children and teenagers may want a second tub for a bigger main, or an adult-sized box such as monbento's MB Original, which holds 1 litre across two tiers. Put a name on everything, lids included.

At home, a divided plate can make a new food less of a threat, because it can sit in its own section without touching anything safe. The NAS suggests introducing new foods in small steps, starting with simply looking at them, then touching, then having them on the plate. A section of its own is a natural place for that.

Things to know

  • We have not tested these. Sizes, materials and washing advice come from the makers' pages, checked on 11 Sep 2026.
  • Where the ARK plate is made. The product page says both that it is designed and made in the USA and that ARK is designed and manufactured in the UK. We could not confirm which.
  • Microwave safety varies. ARK advises against the microwave. We could not confirm whether the Yumbox can go in, so assume it cannot. Joseph Joseph says the GoEat pot can, with the locking collar removed and the lid resting loosely on top.
  • Seals wear. Silicone seals are the part that fails first. Hand-washing the lid, as Yumbox advises, is the cheapest way to make it last.
  • When to ask for more help. A plate is a practical fix for how food is served. The National Autistic Society suggests seeking advice if someone accepts fewer than 20 foods, refuses whole food groups, is losing weight or is missing school or social time because of eating. It suggests starting with your GP or a dietitian.

Questions people ask

Can you put a divided plate in the microwave?
Check each one. ARK says its Divided Section Plate is not recommended for the microwave, while Joseph Joseph says both parts of the GoEat pot can go in once the locking collar is off and the lid sits loosely on top.
Is a Yumbox leakproof enough for yoghurt?
Yumbox says its Original has a silicone-lined seal that keeps wet foods such as yoghurt or dips apart from dry ones. Carry it flat, and hand-wash the lid, which Yumbox recommends to make the seal last.
How big are Yumbox compartments?
Five main compartments hold half a cup each, plus a small dip well, according to Yumbox. That suits a child; an adult lunch may need a second tub alongside.
Is it odd for an adult to use a divided plate?
No. The National Autistic Society notes that how food is presented or positioned on the plate can decide whether it gets eaten, and that some people always use the same plate. A plain teal or orange plate looks like ordinary tableware.
How long can a packed lunch stay out of the fridge?
The Food Standards Agency says to throw away perishables that have been out of the fridge for more than two hours in hotter than usual weather, and to use frozen ice packs and a cool bag.
