HelloFresh vs Gousto: which is easier to live with when you have little energy?

In HelloFresh vs Gousto, the difference that matters on low-energy weeks is the deadline and the decisions. HelloFresh says to skip or cancel by 11:59pm five days before delivery and offers 100+ recipes; Gousto's help pages put its cut-off at noon three days before, with 175+ recipes. Gousto shows a standard £3.20 a portion; HelloFresh does not show prices.

Our picks

  1. Food

Best for: A price you can see before you sign up

    Gousto Recipe Box

    By Gousto

Gousto shows from £3.20 a portion on a five-recipe box for four, plus a £3.99 delivery fee, and boxes for one to five people. The first six boxes are discounted, so work out box seven before you start.

  2. Food

Best for: A smaller menu and a longer skip window

    HelloFresh Recipe Box

    By HelloFresh

HelloFresh says over half its recipes are ready in 30 minutes or less, and lets you skip up to four weeks at a time. It shows no price on its home page or FAQ, and its pricing sits behind a postcode form.

  3. Food

Best for: A short menu of 28 meals

    Mindful Chef Recipe Box

    By Mindful Chef

From about £4.50 a serving, for one, two or four people, with two to five dishes a box. It costs more per portion than Gousto's headline price, and we could not confirm its cut-off from a page we could read in full.

HelloFresh vs Gousto: which skip rules are kinder?

Gousto's cut-off is later, and HelloFresh lets you skip further ahead. Both are tight enough to cost you a box if you miss them.

HelloFresh says to skip, change or cancel by 11:59pm five days before your delivery, and that you can skip up to four weeks at a time. Gousto's help pages say the cut-off is noon, three days before delivery, and that you can un-skip before then. The Gousto help page loaded without its body text when we fetched it, so the three-day rule comes from the page text a search returned, and you should confirm it in your account.

Mindful Chef's help pages put its cut-off at four days before delivery, again from search text rather than a page we could open in full. Put the cut-off in your calendar as a repeating weekly alert for the day before.

What happens if you forget to choose?

On Gousto, the box still comes. Its help pages say that if you have not picked recipes by the cut-off, it sends chef-selected recipes based on your subscription preferences and available stock.

That is a mixed result. It spares you from choosing, and it also means you may get food you did not pick. We could not confirm what HelloFresh does if you do not choose, so find out before you rely on it. The same help page says that if you skip in time the card charge is voided, which can take up to 10 business days to clear.

How much choice do you want to face each week?

Fewer choices mean fewer decisions, and the three services differ a lot.

  • Gousto: 175+ recipes a week, with more than 40 ten-minute meals, according to its home page.
  • HelloFresh: 100+ recipes a week. It says over half are ready in 30 minutes or less, and some in as little as 10.
  • Mindful Chef: 28 meals a week, for one, two or four people, with two to five dishes in a box. Its best-case time is 20 minutes, and its sample cards show 25 to 30.

A smaller menu is not a better one. But if scrolling a long list makes you give up, Mindful Chef's 28 is the shortest.

Standard price: what we could and could not see

Gousto is the only one of the three that shows a standard price without a postcode. Its home page says £3.20 a portion on a five-recipe box for four, excluding a £3.99 delivery fee and surcharges, and £1.60 a portion for a new customer. Its box-price page gives a two-person example at £46.50, or £4.65 a portion, and £23.25 for a new customer.

Gousto's discounts are 50% off the first box, 40% off the second, and 20% off boxes three to six. Its page says you can save up to £79.05 across the first six boxes. That is shorter than the eight-box offer we noted in September, so offers do move. Box seven is the first at full price.

HelloFresh's home page and FAQ show no price. Gousto's own comparison table lists HelloFresh at from £3.65 a portion, but that is Gousto describing a rival and we could not check it. Mindful Chef says prices start from £4.50 a serving, with 30% off the first four orders and free delivery on the first box.

Cooking time and what the boxes do not remove

All three take away the shop and the planning, not the cooking. HelloFresh's best case is 10 minutes, Gousto's is 10, and Mindful Chef's is 20.

If cooking is the part that is not happening, a box of raw ingredients will sit in the fridge. Our guide to recipe boxes compares the frozen options, and the guide to kitchen tools covers equipment that cuts steps.

A simple way to decide

Pick the service whose deadline you will actually remember and whose menu you can face. If you tend to forget a weekly deadline, a smaller menu and a calendar alert matter more than a few pence a portion. If you pick well but cook late, choose the shortest cooking times and read 10 minutes as a best case rather than a promise.

Before the first order, do three things. Write down the full price of a box once discounts end. Put the cut-off in your calendar as a repeating alert. Check the delivery day against the days you are home. Then skip the first week that looks hard rather than letting a box sit in the fridge.

Things to know

  • We have not ordered from these services. Facts come from the companies' own pages read on 20 October 2026. Prices and offers change often.
  • HelloFresh says it cannot guarantee a recipe is free of any allergen, and that it does not offer specific allergy preferences. Check allergens on each recipe card.
  • The HelloFresh FAQ gives two slightly different charge deadlines for a first order. Check your account.
  • Gousto charges surcharges on some recipes on top of the per-portion price.
  • Subscription boxes keep coming until you skip or cancel. Cancelling after the cut-off can still cost you a box.

Questions people ask

What happens if you forget to skip a Gousto box?
Gousto's help pages say you cannot cancel or change an order after the cut-off, which is noon three days before delivery. If you have not chosen recipes by then, it sends a box of chef-selected recipes based on your subscription preferences.
Can you skip HelloFresh for several weeks?
Yes. HelloFresh says you can skip up to four weeks at a time, and that changes must be made by 11:59pm five days before your delivery.
Does HelloFresh do boxes for one person?
Its navigation lists Meal Boxes for One, but its FAQ says boxes serve two to four people and that none is designed for one. The two pages disagree, so check at sign-up.
Is Mindful Chef easier than HelloFresh or Gousto?
It has the smallest menu of the three, with 28 meals against 100+ and 175+, which means fewer choices to make. It costs more per serving, from £4.50 against Gousto's standard £3.20 headline.
Do HelloFresh and Gousto deliver on a set day?
Both let you choose a delivery day. HelloFresh says drivers follow your leave-safe instructions for most slots, and Gousto says it offers free next-day delivery on a first box ordered before 11:59am on certain days.
