How do I stop laundry piling up?

To stop laundry piling up, cut the steps between dirty and put away: one lidded basket, detergent that arrives by itself, and a reminder when the wash finishes. The Joseph Joseph Tota 2 One (about £90) hides the pile, smol capsules (from £6) come through the letterbox, and the Due app (about £7.99) nags until the wash is out.

Our picks

Best for: Keeping the dirty pile out of sight

Joseph Joseph Tota 2 One 60L Laundry Basket

By Joseph Joseph, sold by Joseph Joseph

A 60 litre lidded hamper with a removable tote bag, so you carry the bag to the machine instead of armfuls. About £90, which is a lot for a basket, and it has one compartment, so no sorting built in.

  2. Home

Best for: Sorting lights and darks as you drop them

    Double Compartment Foldable Laundry Hamper

    By Dunelm

Two sections inside, a front pocket for small things and a drawstring top, in cotton that goes in the machine. About £18; a drawstring is not a lid, so the pile is less hidden than in the Tota.

Best for: Never running out of detergent

    smol Laundry Capsules Subscription

    By smol

Capsules come through the letterbox on a schedule set by how often you wash: £6 for 24, about 25p a wash, in bio, non-bio or fragrance-free. Easy to change online, but it is one more subscription to keep an eye on.

  4. App

Best for: Remembering the wash has finished

    Due: Reminders and Timers

By Due, sold by App Store

Reminders repeat every few minutes until you mark them done, so wet washing does not sit in the drum overnight. About £7.99 once, no subscription, App Store only.

Best for: A laundry day that sets itself

    Todoist Pro

By Todoist (Doist), sold by Todoist

Type 'wash towels every Sunday 10am' and it builds the repeating reminder for you. About £6.99 a month for Pro, which is a lot if laundry is all you use it for.

Laundry is not one job. It is at least seven: gather it, sort it, load it, add detergent, move it to dry, bring it in, put it away. The whole chain stops at whichever step you skip, and the pile grows at that point. So the fix is not trying harder at all seven. It is taking steps out.

Why does laundry pile up?

Laundry piles up because it is a chain of small steps, and it stalls at the one with the least reward. Loading the machine feels like progress. Putting clean clothes away feels like nothing, so the clean pile on the chair gets taller.

Most homes have two piles, not one. There is the floordrobe: clothes worn once, not dirty enough to wash, with nowhere to go. And there is the clean mountain: dry, unfolded, lived out of. Neither is a character flaw. Both are signs that a step in the chain has no easy home.

How to stop laundry piling up

Take steps out rather than adding willpower. Every change below removes one decision or one trip.

  1. One basket, where clothes come off. If the basket is in the bedroom, clothes go in it. If it is downstairs, they go on the floor. A lid hides what is inside, so the pile is not staring at you.
  2. Detergent that arrives by itself. A subscription like smol posts capsules through the letterbox on a schedule set by how often you wash. Running out stops being a reason not to start.
  3. Capsules, not liquid. No measuring, no cap, no drips. One capsule, one wash.
  4. A reminder that will not let go. Most machines beep once. The Due app repeats a reminder every few minutes until you tick it off, so the wash is moved while it is still fresh.
  5. Only start a wash you can move. If you will be out when it finishes, use the machine's delay-start so it ends when you are home. Check your manual; most modern machines have one.
  6. Give worn-once clothes a hook. A hook or chair for clothes that are not dirty stops them landing in the wash or on the floor.
  7. Let the clean basket be the wardrobe. Dressing from a basket of clean clothes is allowed. If folding is the step that never happens, skip it for things that do not crease: socks, pants, gym kit, pyjamas.
  8. Use no-fold drawers. One drawer per type, things thrown in, not folded. Tidy enough to find what you need, fast enough to actually happen.

What to look for in a laundry basket

  • A lid. It keeps the pile out of sight. The Tota 2 One's felt-finish lid docks on the side of the basket while you load it, so you are not holding it.
  • A removable bag with handles. You carry one bag to the machine instead of armfuls that drop socks on the stairs. The Tota's tote has handles plus a helper handle on the base for tipping it out.
  • Capacity in litres. 60 litres is big enough for towels and bedding. Smaller baskets fill faster, which is only useful if a full basket is your cue to wash.
  • Footprint. The Tota measures 73.9cm high, 48.1cm wide and 33.1cm deep according to Joseph Joseph. Measure the gap before you order.
  • Compartments. Single or split. A split basket only helps if you sort as you drop. The Dunelm hamper has two sections inside and measures 35 by 35 by 55cm, Dunelm says.

What to look for in detergent

  • Format. Capsules remove the measuring step. Liquid is cheaper per wash but messier.
  • Scent. If strong smells bother you, look for fragrance-free. smol sells bio, non-bio and fragrance-free versions.
  • Price per wash. smol lists £6 for 24 capsules, about 25p a wash, at the time of writing.
  • Delivery that fits your letterbox. A parcel you have to collect from the depot is one more job.
  • Temperature. smol says its capsules work even at 20°C. A cooler wash is also shorter on many machines, which means less waiting.

smol laundry capsules from £6 Buying detergent, measuring 24 capsules, about 25p a wash; letterbox delivery A subscription to manage

Todoist Pro about £6.99 a month Deciding when to wash Repeating tasks typed in plain English Monthly cost

If money is tight

The method matters more than the kit. Any basket with a lid, put where clothes come off, does most of what the Tota does. The Dunelm split hamper, about £18, adds sorting for a fifth of the price. Supermarket own-brand capsules remove the measuring step for less. Your phone's built-in timer set for the length of the cycle does a basic version of Due's job, and it is free.

The free changes are the powerful ones: a hook for worn-once clothes, a clean basket you dress from, and no-fold drawers. None of them costs anything.

Things to know

  • We have not tested these. Details come from Joseph Joseph's, Dunelm's and smol's own UK pages, checked on 11 September 2026. Prices change.
  • Keep capsules out of reach of children. Follow the warnings on the box and keep the lid shut.
  • Subscriptions creep. smol lets you change or cancel online. Set a calendar reminder to review it every few months, so it stays useful rather than piling up in the hall.
  • One load, start to finish, beats three loads started. If you only have energy for part of the chain, do a smaller load and finish it.
  • Good enough is fine. Unfolded clean clothes in a basket are still clean clothes.

Questions people ask

How often should you do laundry?
Often enough that one load clears the basket. A small load most days is easier to finish than a weekend mountain, because each load is one short job rather than an afternoon.
Do smol capsules work on a cold wash?
smol says its capsules work at low temperatures, even 20°C. We have not tested them.
Can you pause or change a smol subscription?
smol says you can change or cancel your order at any time from your account, and it sets delivery by how often you wash.
Is a two-section laundry basket better?
Only if you will sort as you drop. The Tota 2 One has a single compartment; if sorting at the machine is the step you skip, a split basket such as the Dunelm Double Compartment hamper (about £18) may suit you better.
Where should the laundry basket go?
Where your clothes come off, usually the bedroom or bathroom. A basket in the utility room means a floordrobe in the bedroom.
