What is the best visual timer?

The Time Timer Original 8 inch is the classic visual timer: a silent red disc that shrinks over up to 60 minutes and reads across a room. The Secura does the same job for under £10. Adults at a desk may prefer the Ticktime flip cube; for children's routines, a traffic-light or bedtime light timer is simpler.

What is a visual timer?

A visual timer shows time passing as a shrinking shape or a change of colour, so you can see how much is left without reading numbers.

The classic design is a red disc that gets smaller as the minutes go, until it disappears. You set it by turning a dial. Time Timer describes its red disc as patented, and plenty of cheaper timers now work the same way. Other kinds use traffic-light colours, lights that fade, or a countdown on a phone screen.

They are used in classrooms, kitchens and offices, by children learning routines and by adults who lose track of an hour. We have not tested these timers; details below come from each maker's own listing or website, checked on 11 September 2026.

What to look for in a visual timer

Six specs decide which timer suits you:

  • Maximum time. Most dial timers run to 60 minutes. The Learning Resources Time Tracker Mini runs from 5 minutes to 2 hours. The Ticktime cube goes to 99 minutes 59 seconds. The Fledglings bedtime timer counts 1, 2, 5, 10 or 15 minutes per step.
  • Size and viewing distance. The Time Timer Original is 19cm square and readable across a room. The Secura is 7.8cm across, better for a desk than a wall. The Learning Resources timer is 15.5cm wide and visible from all sides.
  • Sound while it runs. Ticking bothers some people more than any alarm. Time Timer says its timer is silent. Secura says it has no loud ticking, which is not the same thing.
  • Sound at the end. Look for a way to turn it down or off. Secura has two volume levels (about 70dB or 50dB) and rings for 3 or 60 seconds. Ticktime offers sound, vibration or a flashing light. Learning Resources has a volume dial.
  • How you set it. A twist dial, a flip, or buttons. A flip is quickest. A dial is easiest for small children to understand.
  • Power and mounting. Time Timer takes 2 AA batteries and has a magnetic back. Secura takes 2 AAA. The Ticktime cube is rechargeable and magnetic. The Fledglings timer takes 3 AAA.

Visual timers for adults

For a desk, pick something small, quiet and quick to start: the Ticktime cube or a Time Timer.

The Ticktime cube suits people who want to start a timer without thinking. Each face is a preset, so turning it over starts 25 minutes of work or a 5-minute break. The drawback is that it shows digits, not a shape, so you still have to read it.

The Time Timer Original is the one to pick if seeing the time shrink is the point. It sits on the desk on fold-out feet, sticks to a fridge or whiteboard by its magnetic back, and makes no sound until the end, if you want one at all. The Secura does the same job for a third of the price, with a smaller face.

If the timer is really about managing a list, an app may suit better. Llama Life puts a countdown on every task and shows the finish time for the whole list. Tiimo lays the day out as coloured blocks with timers. Our planners guide compares more.

Visual timers for kids

For children, pick big colours and as few numbers as possible.

The Learning Resources Time Tracker Mini uses traffic lights: green while time runs, amber at a warning time you set, red at the end. Children who cannot tell the time yet can still read it. The Secura puts cartoon animals on its disc, and the Time Timer comes with a dry-erase "first, then" card for pairing a task with what comes next.

For bedtime, the Fledglings Bedtime Routines Visual Timer is built for the job. You stick picture stickers for up to six steps (bath, teeth, pyjamas, story) and choose a time for each; the moon lights up in phases as time passes, with no beeps. Fledglings is a not-for-profit community interest company, and it says its sales support Contact, the charity for families with disabled children. For picture boards of the whole day, see our visual schedules guide.

Things to know

  • Small parts. Fledglings says its timer is not suitable for children under 36 months because of small parts. Check the age guidance on any timer used by a young child.
  • Batteries are usually extra. Time Timer, Secura and Fledglings all say batteries are not included.
  • The Secura has an odd off switch. To stop the alarm, the maker says to turn the knob to 5 and quickly back to 0.
  • Charge the cube first. Ticktime says to charge it for 12 hours before first use and not to use it while charging.
  • Silent is not always silent. Mechanical dial timers can make some noise as they run. If any sound at all is a problem, choose one sold as silent, or a light-based timer.

Questions people ask

Is the Time Timer silent?
Yes, while it runs: there is no ticking. An optional alert sounds at the end, and you can switch it on or off.
What batteries does a Time Timer take?
The Original 8 inch takes 2 AA batteries, which are not included.
Can I get a visual timer on my phone?
Yes. Llama Life puts a countdown on each task, Tiimo shows the day as coloured blocks with timers, and the Time Timer comes with limited-time access to Time Timer's own app.
How long can a visual timer run for?
Most dial timers stop at 60 minutes. The Learning Resources Time Tracker Mini runs up to 2 hours, and the Ticktime cube up to 99 minutes 59 seconds.
What age is a visual timer suitable from?
Check each one. Fledglings says its bedtime timer is for ages 3 and up because of small parts; the others here are sold for classrooms, homes and adults.
