Where can I buy adaptive school uniform in the UK?

Marks and Spencer is the main UK high-street source of adaptive school uniform: Easy Dressing polo shirts with riptape instead of buttons (from about £4.50 for two), pull-on Easy Dressing trousers (from about £11 for two) and adaptive T-shirts with riptape shoulders. Add seam-free SmartKnitKIDS socks and a label-free SAM Sensory vest underneath.

What makes school uniform adaptive?

Adaptive school uniform looks like ordinary uniform but swaps the hard parts, buttons, zips, stiff labels and tight waists, for riptape, pull-on waists and hidden labels, so children can dress themselves or be dressed faster.

That matters for children with dyspraxia who find buttons slow, for children who find labels and seams unbearable, and for any family whose school mornings go wrong at the getting-dressed stage. You do not need a diagnosis to buy it, and from the playground it just looks like uniform.

What to look for in adaptive school uniform

  • Fastenings. Riptape instead of buttons (M&S Easy Dressing polos), riptape at the shoulders (M&S adaptive T-shirts), or no fastening at all (pull-on trousers with an elasticated waist and a mock fly).
  • Labels. Printed or hidden labels beat scratchy sewn ones. The M&S adaptive T-shirts hide their labels in the yoke. The SAM Sensory vest has no tactile labels.
  • Seams. Seam-free socks and vests remove the two worst offenders. SmartKnitKIDS socks have no seams at all. The SAM vest has no seams and a non-binding top.
  • Fabric. The M&S polos and adaptive T-shirts are 100% cotton. The Easy Dressing trousers are 65% polyester and 35% viscose. If your child only tolerates cotton against their legs, check before you buy.
  • Growing room. The M&S trousers' hems let down 3cm, which buys a term or two.
  • Washing. The M&S items wash at 40°C and tumble dry. The SAM vest wants a gentle 30°C wash and drying flat, which is worth knowing before you buy only one.
  • The school's rules. Colour, logo and footwear rules still apply. Check the uniform list before you order.

What does the law say about school uniform in England?

In England, from 1 September 2026, a state school cannot require more than three different branded items of uniform, or four at secondary if one of them is a tie.

Section 35 of the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026 came into force on 1 September 2026. It covers primary and secondary pupils. A branded item is one with the school's name or logo, or an academy's or its proprietor's, or one that is only available from particular suppliers because of its colour, design, fabric or some other distinctive feature. GOV.UK describes the change as capping branded items at three, excluding ties, from September 2026.

For adaptive uniform, this helps in a quiet way. Fewer compulsory branded items means more of the uniform can be plain, and plain items can be bought from ranges like M&S Easy Dressing rather than one supplier's standard stock.

The statutory guidance on the cost of school uniforms, updated on 6 July 2026, also says schools must meet their duties under equalities legislation when setting uniform policy. It gives the example that if a pupil cannot wear a branded item for a medical or health reason, the school should allow a suitable alternative, such as a plain sports shirt in a similar colour.

These rules are for England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland set their own.

Talking to the school

The quickest route is usually a short, specific request: what your child finds hard, and the plain alternative you would like them to wear.

For example: riptape polos in the school colour instead of buttoned ones, a seam-free vest under the shirt, pull-on trousers instead of a fly, or plain black trainers that open with a zip. Schools see these requests often. If your child has a SEN support plan or an EHCP, ask for uniform adjustments to be written into it, so they carry over when staff or teachers change.

Things to know

  • We have not tested these items ourselves. Details come from the M&S, Fledglings, Sensory Smart and Amazon UK pages on 11 September 2026, and prices change.
  • M&S easy-dressing polos and trousers look like standard uniform, but they are not branded with your school's logo. If a logo polo is one of the school's branded items, ask whether a plain one is acceptable.
  • Riptape wears and collects fluff. Close it before washing so it does not catch other clothes.
  • The SAM vest sizes start at 4 to 5 years, and the 7 to 8 size was out of stock when we checked.
  • The Billy high tops are sold in the UK by a reseller on Amazon, with only a handful of ratings.

Questions people ask

Does the three branded items limit apply to academies?
Yes. Section 35 of the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026 defines a branded item to include an academy's or its proprietor's name or logo, so academies in England are covered as well as maintained schools.
Are M&S Easy Dressing polo shirts only white?
The two-pack we checked was white, in 100% cotton with riptape fastening. Check the product page for other colours before you order, because colours vary by school.
How much can the M&S Easy Dressing trousers be let down?
M&S says the hems can be let down by 3cm as your child grows. The trousers come in black and navy.
What is an adaptive T-shirt for?
The M&S adaptive T-shirts have riptape at the shoulders, so the neck opens wider and goes over the head more easily, plus concealed front openings for medical tubes and labels hidden in the yoke.
Is a SAM Sensory vest thin enough for under a school shirt?
Fledglings sells it for wearing under school clothing. It is a close-fitting organic cotton, modal and elastane vest with no tactile labels or seams.
