What are the best sensory friendly school shoes?

For sensory friendly school shoes, two easy-on options are on our shelf: Skechers Slip-ins Bounder Pro (£40), a trainer with a heel that holds its shape and fixed stretch laces, and Billy Adaptive High Top canvas shoes (about £66), where a wrap-around zip opens the whole top. Neither is a traditional school shoe, so check your school's rules first.

What makes a school shoe sensory friendly?

A sensory friendly school shoe takes away the small things a child notices through a long day: laces that need tying, a tight tongue, a hard heel, stiff lining, or a top that takes effort to pull on. The National Autistic Society names school uniforms as something that can be uncomfortable to wear for autistic children, and says sensitivity can vary with tiredness and stress. There is no one pair that works for everyone.

Can sensory friendly shoes be school shoes?

Only if your school allows them. We cannot tell you school policy: schools set their own uniform and footwear rules, and many ask for plain black leather-look shoes. Check your school before buying either of our picks. If your child needs a particular type of shoe, ask the school what adjustments they will make and put the request in writing.

What to look for in sensory friendly school shoes

  • Easy entry. A heel that holds its shape, or an opening that goes wide, means no pushing or bending the back down. Skechers builds the Bounder Pro with a heel that stays upright. The Billy zips round the side and toe.
  • Closures. Fixed stretch laces never need tying. Zips and straps are the other option. Skechers describes an easy-on, easy-off adaptive closure.
  • Lining and insole. The Skechers has a textile lining and a cushioned memory foam insole. The Billy listing notes that footbeds can be removable but advises against removing both when an AFO brace is worn.
  • Width. The Skechers listing we read shows medium width only. The Billy D|R line is sold in medium, wide and extra-wide.
  • Washing. The Skechers is machine washable. We could not confirm care for the Billy canvas.
  • Fit. Dorset HealthCare advises that children's feet are measured by a trained fitter, both feet, for length and width. It suggests checking younger children's size every four to eight weeks and older children's every 12 weeks. NHS trusts' advice varies, so ask your local service.

Sensory friendly school shoes compared

Shoe Price Entry Upper Drawback
Skechers Slip-ins Bounder Pro (boys) £40 Stays-open heel, fixed stretch laces Mesh and synthetic Out of stock with pre-order on 20 October; medium width only
Billy Adaptive High Top, Canvas (kids) about £66 Wrap-around zip, wide opening Canvas Price; UK sizes and colours not confirmed

The Skechers UK page lists little kids 9.5 to 13.5 and 1 to 2.5, and big kids 3 to 6 in half sizes. A Billy D|R listing on SpecialKids.Company shows UK sizes 10 to 2 and 3 to 5, but that was for a different colourway than ours, so check the listing you buy.

Should you buy a zip, a slip-on or a Velcro shoe?

Choose a slip-on if the daily fight is laces, and a zip if the fight is the foot not fitting through the top. The Bounder Pro is a slip-on with stretch laces that stay in place. The Billy is a zip that opens right round. Velcro is the third route. It is common on school shoes, and we have no verified Velcro pick, so it sits under suggested additions.

How do you raise shoes with your child's school?

Ask early, ask in writing, and say what the problem is. A short message that names the difficulty, such as laces taking ten minutes every morning or a rigid heel that hurts by lunch, gives the school something to act on. Mention the specific shoe you want to use and offer to send a photo. Schools set their own rules, so we cannot say what yours will agree to. Many have a way to record an agreed adjustment, such as a note in your child's file, and it is worth asking what theirs is.

What about growing feet?

Children outgrow shoes quickly, and a shoe that is too tight can cause the same daily refusal as one with a bad lining. Measure before you buy, and again when putting on becomes a struggle. The Skechers listing offers half sizes through the range, which helps. Leave a little room at the toe, and never rely on age to pick a size.

Do socks matter as much as the shoe?

Often yes. A seam across the toes or a baggy sock inside a shoe can be the real irritant. Our seamless socks guide covers the options, and a pair of fully seamless socks is a cheaper experiment than new shoes. Try them with the shoes you already have before you spend more.

Things to know

  • We have not worn or tested either shoe. Details come from retailer pages on 20 October 2026, and prices change.
  • The Skechers page showed an Out of stock label and a Pre-Order button, and the size availability was unclear. Check before planning around it.
  • The Amazon page for the Billy would not load product details, so price, sizes and returns for that exact listing rest on our product data. Amazon's page says eligible shoes sold or fulfilled by Amazon have free 30-day returns, and we could not confirm that this listing qualifies.
  • Neither shoe is a conventional school shoe. Ask the school first.
  • If your child has a foot condition or wears orthotics, ask a podiatrist before changing shoes.
