What are the best fidget toys for adults to use at work?

The best fidget toys for adults are quiet and small enough to hide in a hand. The ONO Roller Jr (under £25) turns silently in meetings, a Tangle Jr (under £10) twists under the desk, Crazy Aaron's putty or Speks Crags (magnets, 14 and over only) suit desk time, and under-desk pedals give your legs a job.

Our picks

    By ONO, sold by Amazon

What makes a fidget toy good for adults?

A good adult fidget is silent or close to it, fits in one closed hand and looks like nothing much. Check these before you buy.

  • Noise. Silent: putty and a smooth roller like the ONO Roller Jr. A faint click: Tangle Jr. A clack: magnetic stones such as Speks Crags. In an open-plan office or on a video call, noise is the thing colleagues notice first.
  • Size. If it fits in a closed fist or a jacket pocket, you will carry it. Spiky rings and chew keys are small enough to keep one in every bag.
  • One hand or two. Rollers, rings and Tangles work one-handed, so you can fidget and scroll. Putty and magnets tend to take two.
  • Mess. Putty picks up fibres and dust and can mark fabric. Magnets pick up metal crumbs and paperclips. Rollers and Tangles leave nothing behind.
  • Cost of losing it. Fidgets go missing. A 30-pack of spiky rings for under £10 hurts less than a under £25 roller left on a train.
  • Safety. Magnets and small parts are the two risks, covered below.
Fidget Price Noise Hands Best for Drawback
ONO Roller Jr Usually under £25 Silent One Meetings and calls Small for big hands
Tangle Jr Usually under £10 Faint click One or two Anywhere, cheaply Not silent
Crazy Aaron's Thinking Putty Usually under £10 Silent Two Desk time Picks up fluff, marks fabric
Speks Crags Usually under £15 Clack Two Weight and texture Magnets: 14 and over only
Blulu spiky rings (30) Usually under £10 Silent One Pockets and drawers Small parts
Chewigem Fidget Keys about £6.95 Silent One Squeezing or chewing Wears out
AGM under-desk pedals Usually under £30 Quiet whirr None Legs that want to move Needs knee room
Tumaz wobble cushion Usually under £25 Silent None Shifting in your seat Raises your seat height

Which fidget toys are quiet enough for meetings?

The ONO Roller Jr and Thinking Putty are the quietest; a Tangle Jr is close behind.

The roller is the most discreet of the lot. It turns between the fingers of one hand without a sound, and sits under the table edge where nobody sees it. Putty is silent too, but it looks like putty, so it suits your own desk better than a client meeting. A Tangle Jr makes a faint click as its segments turn, which disappears in a noisy office and stands out in a quiet one.

Spiky rings are a good middle ground: silent, one-handed and small enough to roll under the desk. Magnetic stones are the loudest option here, and the clack carries on a call.

If your legs are the part that needs to move

Put the movement under the desk, where a hand fidget cannot reach.

The AGM under-desk pedals sit on the floor so your legs can keep moving while the rest of you stays in the meeting. They are under £30. Check you have knee room first: pedalling lifts your knees, and a low desk or a drawer unit gets in the way.

The Tumaz wobble cushion is the quieter option. It is an extra-thick inflatable disc that sits on your chair so you can rock and shift without getting up, and it comes with a pump. It adds height, so you may need to raise your screen or drop the chair a notch.

Both work alongside a hand fidget, not instead of one.

Are magnetic fidget toys safe?

For adults, used sensibly, yes; around children, no. Swallowed magnets can cause serious internal injuries.

Speks sells Crags, a tin of 150-plus small ferrite magnets, for adults and teens 14 and over. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) says adult desk toys with small magnets should be kept out of reach of small children, and that if you think a child has swallowed a magnet you should take them straight to A&E or call 999. GOV.UK explains why: swallowed magnets can be pulled together inside the intestines, squeezing the tissue between them.

In practice: keep the tin closed, count the stones back in if you share a home with children, and do not leave magnets on a desk that a toddler can reach.

Things to know

  • Putty and young children. Crazy Aaron's says Thinking Putty is not for children under 3 because it can be a choking hazard.
  • Getting putty out of clothes. Crazy Aaron's recommends scraping off the excess, then using 70% or stronger isopropyl rubbing alcohol until the putty lifts, then washing as normal.
  • Small parts. Spiky rings come 30 to a pack. Keep spares away from anyone who might put them in their mouth.
  • Chewables wear out. Chew keys are for chewing, but every chewable tears in the end. Replace them once the surface splits.
  • What we can and cannot say. We describe what these things do in your hands, not what they do for your attention. We have not tested them ourselves; specs are from the listings and makers named above.

Questions people ask

What is the quietest fidget toy?
Putty and a smooth roller such as the ONO Roller Jr make no noise at all. Tangle Jr clicks faintly, and magnetic stones like Speks Crags clack as they snap together.
Is Thinking Putty messy?
Not if it lives in its tin. Crazy Aaron's says the putty picks up fibres and dust over time, and getting it out of fabric takes 70% or stronger rubbing alcohol.
Are fidget toys just for children?
No. Plenty are made and sold for adults: Speks sells Crags for adults and teens 14 and over, and the ONO Roller is sold as a silent fidget for meetings.
What fidget can I use on a video call?
Something silent and below the camera: putty, an ONO Roller or a Tangle Jr under the desk. Magnetic stones click, and a laptop microphone may pick them up.
