A desk setup for ADHD and a busy brain: movement, light and fewer distractions
Last checked 11 September 2026. Written by the Divergent Products team. How we pick.

What is the best desk setup for ADHD?
The best desk setup for ADHD lets you move without leaving your seat, lights the desk rather than your eyes, and keeps the phone out of reach. Start cheap with a balance cushion or under-desk pedals, add a monitor light bar, and only buy a standing desk and walking pad once you know you will use them.

What to look for in a desk setup for ADHD
A desk setup for ADHD has three jobs: somewhere for restless energy to go, light that suits the task, and fewer things asking for your attention. Everything else is decoration.
Here is what to measure or check for each:
- Seated movement. The cheapest kit lets you move without standing up. A balance disc is about 33cm across and adds about 5.5cm to your seat height. Under-desk pedals like the AGM stand 24cm tall, so you need that much clear space under the desk plus room for your knees at the top of each turn.
- Standing. Look at the height range, not just the top height. The FlexiSpot E5 runs from 60 to 125cm, a wide range for both sitting and standing. Four memory presets mean one button press to swap.
- Walking. Check speed range, noise and the user weight limit. The WalkingPad Z1 runs from 1 to 6 km/h, its maker quotes under 45dB, and it takes users up to 110kg. The Superun walking pad, under £150, takes up to 136kg and has a 6% incline.
- Light. Two numbers matter: brightness on the desk in lux, and colour temperature in kelvin (K). The BenQ ScreenBar gives 500 lux by default, adjusts from 230 to 955 lux, and runs from warm 2700K to cool 6500K. The maker says it is flicker-free.
- Glare. HSE's workstation checklist suggests keeping the screen from directly facing windows or bright lights, and using blinds to stop intrusive light.
- Noise. Motors are quoted in decibels. The FlexiSpot E5 is quoted under 50dB. Noise-cancelling headphones deal with everything else.
- The phone. Distance works better than willpower. A drawer in another room is free. A timed lock box makes it harder to fetch.

Standing desk, walking pad or neither?
You do not need either to start: try the under £15 disc or the under £30 pedals for a month before spending nearly £480 on a desk and a walking pad.
If the cheap kit gets used every day and you still want to be on your feet, a standing desk is the next step. It is also the one that is easiest to justify, because you can use it sitting down on bad days. An electric frame with memory presets matters more than it sounds: a desk you have to wind up by hand tends to stay at one height.
A walking pad only makes sense with a standing desk that goes high enough for you to type comfortably while standing. The WalkingPad Z1 starts at 1 km/h, arrives fully assembled and folds in half to 81 by 56cm for storage. At 23kg it is heavy to move each day. The Superun is less than half the price, takes heavier users and adds an incline, but its listing gives a length of about 108cm, against 81cm for the folded Z1.
Can your employer pay for your desk setup?
Often, yes. Many employers must assess your workstation, and Access to Work can pay for specialist equipment.
HSE says that if you use display screen equipment daily, as part of your normal work, continuously for an hour or more, your employer must carry out a workstation assessment. It should be redone when a workstation changes, when someone new starts, or when you report discomfort. That assessment is a natural moment to ask for a light bar, a footrest or a different chair.
Access to Work is a government grant towards practical support at work, including specialist equipment. GOV.UK says it covers conditions including ADHD, autism and dyslexia, you do not need a diagnosis to apply, you do not pay it back and it does not affect other benefits. You must be 16 or over and in paid work in England, Scotland or Wales. We could not find anything saying whether it funds walking pads or standing desks specifically, so describe what the equipment is for when you apply. Our Access to Work and reasonable adjustments guides go through the process.
Things to know
- Measure before you buy. Check knee clearance for pedals, your desk height with a disc on the chair, and your monitor's thickness for the ScreenBar. BenQ says it also fits curved monitors of 1800R and flatter.
- Read the walking pad's safety instructions. Respect the user weight limit, keep the power cable out of the way and give yourself room to step off.
- Small fidgets and small children. ONO recommends the Roller Jr for ages 5 and up; Tangle lists 3 and up.
- Check the timer before you lock the phone. Vaydeer's own listing warns you to check the selected time before confirming.
- We have not tested this kit. Specs come from each maker's listing on Amazon UK and from HSE and GOV.UK pages, checked on 11 September 2026. These things change the room around you; whether they suit you is something only a few weeks of use will tell.
Questions people ask
- How bright should a desk light be for computer work?
- BenQ sets the ScreenBar to 500 lux on the desk by default, which it says meets an American office lighting standard, and drops to 300 lux in a dark room. You can adjust it between 230 and 955 lux.
- Will a walking pad be too loud for video calls?
- WalkingPad quotes under 45dB for the Z1's motor, but footsteps add their own noise and we have not measured it. Try a call with a friend before your first work meeting on it.
- Do I need a standing desk to use a walking pad?
- Yes. You need a desk that rises to a comfortable standing height for you. The FlexiSpot E5 goes up to 125cm.
- What is the cheapest way to move more at a desk?
- A Tangle Jr fidget costs under £10 and the Amazon Basics balance disc under £15. Both are worth trying before anything with a motor.
- Is a wobble cushion the same as a balance disc?
- Yes, they are names for the same thing: an inflatable PVC disc about 33cm across. The Tumaz version, under £25, is slightly thicker at 6cm.
