Phone lock boxes with timers: which to buy in the UK

How does a timed phone lock box work?

You put the phone inside, set a countdown, and the lid stays shut until the timer reaches zero. That is the whole idea: the decision to put the phone down is made once, not every four minutes.

Where boxes differ is what happens when you really need it back. Some have no way in at all. Some let you in for a fee. Some will give you a code if you email the seller. That difference matters more than the colour or the price, so decide how strict you want it before you choose.

We have not tested these boxes. The details below come from each maker's own listing on Amazon UK, and from the Kitchen Safe and Brick websites, checked on 11 September 2026.

What to look for in a phone lock box

These specs separate one box from another:

• Timer range. The Vaydeer runs from 1 minute to 23 hours 59 minutes. The Neulriscn goes from 1 minute to 30 days. Kitchen Safe runs from 1 minute to 10 days. For a working day or an evening, anything over 12 hours is plenty.
• Emergency opening. The Vaydeer gives one free emergency opening, then charges under £20 each time, a price designed to put you off. The Neulriscn seller will email an override code. Kitchen Safe has no override at all.
• Access for calls and charging. The Vaydeer has a top opening so you can answer an important call and run a charging cable in while the phone stays locked. Most boxes are sealed.
• Size. Measure your phone in its case. The Vaydeer listing gives 21.6 by 9.8 by 2.5cm and says it fits most standard and large smartphones. The Neulriscn is 23.9 by 9.6 by 13.1cm and, per its seller, takes 6 to 7 phones.
• Material. Metal (Vaydeer) is harder to prise open than plastic (Neulriscn, Kitchen Safe). Kitchen Safe's base is clear, so you can see the phone.
• Power. The Vaydeer is rechargeable, with up to 30 days' standby from a 30-minute charge. Kitchen Safe takes 2 AA batteries. The Neulriscn listing does not say.
• Modes. The Neulriscn has a plain lockbox mode with no countdown as well as a timed mode.

Lock box or app?

An app is free and goes everywhere; a box works when the app is the thing you keep switching off.

Start with what you already have. iPhone Screen Time lets you schedule Downtime and set App Limits, protected by a Screen Time passcode. Android's Digital Wellbeing can pause chosen apps on a schedule. Forest is free and turns leaving your phone alone into growing a tree. Freedom's Locked Mode stops you quitting a block session across your phone and laptop at once.

If you override every one of those within ten minutes, a box removes the choice. It is also the only option that works for a household: a box on the kitchen counter at teatime covers everyone's phone without anyone installing anything.

Brick sits between the two. It is a battery-free NFC puck: you tap your phone on it to block the apps you have chosen, and tap again to release them, so you have to walk to wherever you left the Brick. It works with iPhones on iOS 17 or later and Android 12 or later, and the app includes five emergency overrides. Brick's UK site lists it at £44.75, and its FAQ says it ships worldwide and fulfils orders locally from the UK, among other countries.

Phone lock boxes for teenagers and exam revision

Agree the rules together before the box arrives, and settle how they can be reached in an emergency.

The Vaydeer is sold with GCSE and A-level revision in mind, and its child lock stops the settings being changed by accident. Its call opening means a parent can still ring. Short sessions, such as 25 to 50 minutes before the phone comes back out, are a gentler start than a whole evening. Letting them set the timer themselves keeps it their tool rather than yours.

Things to know

• A phone in a sealed box cannot call 999. Keep another way to be reached, such as a landline or another device, or use a box with a call opening. If your phone runs anything you need for health or safety, such as a medical app or a lone-working alarm, do not lock it away.
• Check the time before you confirm. Vaydeer's listing specifically warns you to check the selected time before starting.
• "No early opening" means none. Kitchen Safe's FAQ says the box is designed to open only when the timer reaches zero; the alternative is breaking the base.
• Review counts are small. The Vaydeer had 40 ratings and the Neulriscn 18 on Amazon UK when we checked. Kitchen Safe had over 2,000.
• Boxes solve one problem. They put distance between you and the phone. They do nothing about the laptop, which is where a website blocker comes in.
