Recipe boxes compared for low-energy weeks: Gousto, HelloFresh and Mindful Chef

What to compare in a recipe box

Compare the price per portion after the discount ends, the delivery charge, how many meals you are signing up for and how easily you can skip. The first-box offer tells you very little.

• Standard price per portion. Gousto quotes £3.20 a portion for regular customers on its biggest plan, five recipes for four people. Its two-person box is priced at £46.50, or £4.65 a portion. Mindful Chef starts from £4.50 a serving. HelloFresh advertises meals from £1.82 a portion on its home page; we could not see its standard price without entering a postcode.
• Delivery. Gousto's £3.20 excludes a £3.99 delivery fee and any recipe surcharges, and the first box ships free. Mindful Chef's first box ships free. We could not confirm Mindful Chef's or HelloFresh's delivery charge after the first box.
• Box size. Gousto does one to five people. Mindful Chef does one, two or four people, with two to five recipes a week from a menu of 28. Gousto's lowest per-portion price is on its biggest box, so a box for one costs more per plate.
• Skipping and cancelling. All three say you can skip or cancel at any time. None of the public pages we could read gave the deadline, so find the cut-off in your account on day one. Missing it can mean a box you did not want, and paying for it.
• Cooking time. Mindful Chef says its recipes take as little as 20 minutes; the menu we saw ran from 10 to 40. A recipe box takes away the planning and the shop, not the cooking.

Recipe boxes compared

How much do introductory discounts distort the price?

A lot. Gousto's first box costs half its standard price, and the discount does not fully drop away until the ninth box.

Take Gousto's two-person example. The standard box is £46.50. With the new-customer offer, box one is £23.25, or £2.33 a portion. Box two, at 40% off, works out at about £27.90. Boxes three to eight, at 20% off, are about £37.20 each. Box nine is the first at £46.50. Over the first eight boxes you pay about £274 instead of £372, before any delivery fee. The £1.60 a portion headline for new customers is the discounted version of the £3.20 plan.

Mindful Chef's 30% off the first four orders takes £4.50 down to £3.15 a serving, which is where its "from £3.15" family headline comes from. From order five you pay the full rate.

HelloFresh's £1.82 a portion sits next to a 50% off first box offer on its home page. We could not confirm whether the £1.82 already includes that discount, so read it as the best case rather than the weekly cost.

The practical fix: work out what a full-price box costs before you order the first one, and put a reminder in your calendar a few days before the discount ends. That is the moment to decide whether it is still worth it, while skipping is still free.

If cooking is not happening at all

If even a 20-minute recipe is too much this week, a recipe box is the wrong tool; frozen ready meals or meal drinks take away the cooking as well as the shopping.

COOK's Meal Box for One is fourteen frozen single portions for about £89.95, around £6.42 a meal, from chicken and leek pie and chilli to macaroni cheese and lamb tagine. Each goes in the oven for about 45 minutes, which takes time but not effort. You need the freezer space for fourteen trays.

Huel Ready-to-drink is 400kcal and 20g of protein in a 500ml bottle, about £38 for twelve on subscription. It is a backstop for days when nothing else is happening, not a replacement for food you enjoy.

A mix works too. A two-recipe box for the week, plus a few freezer meals for the nights that fall through, costs less than a full box that goes off in the fridge.
