What's the best label maker and storage if things out of sight get forgotten?

For 'out of sight, out of mind', the best set-up is clear boxes you can see into, labelled on the front. The DYMO LetraTag 200B (under £25) prints labels from your phone over Bluetooth. Really Useful 9 litre clear boxes (under £15) and Sistema KLIP IT tubs (under £15 for four) show what is inside without opening them.

"Out of sight, out of mind" is a joke until it is your bank card, the spare charger or the half-finished tub of soup at the back of the fridge. The NHS lists losing things often, like a wallet, phone or keys, among the signs of ADHD in adults. Storage cannot change how memory works. It can change how much you need to remember.

Why clear storage works for out of sight, out of mind

Clear storage works because you can see what you own without having to remember it. An opaque box asks your memory to hold its contents. A clear box with a label on the front gives you two cues at once, the thing itself and its name, from across the room.

The rule of thumb is simple: every item should be something you can see, or something you can read. If you can do neither, it effectively does not exist. That is why the drawer of cables behind a closed door gets forgotten and the clear box on the open shelf does not.

What to look for in a label maker

  • How you type. The DYMO LetraTag 200B prints from the LetraTag Connect app on your phone over Bluetooth, within about 10 metres according to DYMO's user guide. Keypad models such as the Brother PT-H110 need no phone or app but are slower to type on. Choose the one you will actually pick up.
  • Tape types. DYMO lists paper, clear plastic and iron-on fabric tapes for the LetraTag range. Plastic for damp places, iron-on for uniform, paper for files and dry shelves. Brother P-touch machines take laminated TZe tapes, which the PT-H110 listing says come in up to 60 colour and size combinations.
  • Power. The LetraTag 200B uses four AA batteries. That means no charging cable, but it also means dead batteries at the wrong moment. Keep a spare set in the same box as the label maker.
  • Cutting. You press a cutter button on the machine once the label prints. Simple, but keep your fingers clear.
  • Size of text. Pick the largest text that fits the label. A label you can read from the doorway does more than a neat small one you have to lean in to see.
  • Running costs. Tapes are the ongoing cost: the LetraTag only takes LetraTag cassettes, and the PT-H110 only takes Brother TZe tapes up to 12mm. Check the price of a refill before you commit.

What to look for in clear storage

  • Truly clear sides. Frosted plastic hides the contents almost as well as a cardboard box. You want to see colours and shapes through the front.
  • Lids that clip. Really Useful boxes have clip-lock lids, which matters for anything you carry about or stack.
  • Stacking and a matching family. Buy one range, in a few sizes that stack, rather than a mix. Uniform boxes look tidier on a shelf and fit back where they came from.
  • Size in litres, checked against your shelf. Measure the shelf depth and height before you order. A box that sticks out past the edge gets knocked and then gets moved somewhere out of sight.
  • Labels on the front, not the lid. Once boxes are stacked, only the front shows.

How do you organise a home when out of sight is out of mind?

Keep the things you use every day visible, give each one a single home, and label everything else where you will see it. That is the whole system; the rest is detail.

One home per thing. Keys live on the hook. Chargers live in the box marked "Chargers". When something has one home, you only have to remember one place.

Put the home where the thing is used. Keys by the front door, not in a kitchen drawer. Medicine next to the kettle if that is where you take it. The best spot is where your hand already goes.

Use broad labels. "Batteries", "Tape and glue", "Plasters" are easier to put things back into than "AA batteries" and "AAA batteries". Fewer categories means fewer decisions when you are tidying at speed.

Label the shelf as well as the box. If the box goes back to the right shelf, it gets found next time. A small label on the shelf edge does this.

Leave some things out on purpose. Open shelves and hooks beat closed cupboards for anything daily. The kitchen roll on the worktop is not mess; it is a reminder.

If money is tight

Masking tape and a marker pen do almost everything a label maker does, for a pound or two. Clean takeaway tubs make perfectly good clear storage for small bits like hair bobbles or screws. Buy one Really Useful box for the job that annoys you most, the charger drawer or the medicine stash, and see if it sticks before buying more.

Things to know

  • We have not tested these. Details come from DYMO's user guide and product page and the product listings, checked on 11 September 2026.
  • The LetraTag app asks for Bluetooth and location. DYMO's user guide says to turn on both Bluetooth and Location Services on your phone to connect. Normal for Bluetooth accessories, but worth knowing before you start.
  • Clear boxes show clutter as well as contents. A wall of clear boxes full of mixed bits can look busy. Keep them inside a cupboard with the door open while you get used to it, or use them only for things you look for often.
  • Trackers are a backstop, not a system. A key hook by the door means you rarely need the Chipolo. The tracker is for the days the hook gets missed.
  • Labels only work if they are true. When the contents change, change the label, or it becomes one more thing to ignore.

Questions people ask

Do I need a Bluetooth label maker, or will a cheap keypad one do?
A keypad label maker does the same job. The Brother PT-H110 needs no phone or app; the Bluetooth DYMO is quicker because you type on your phone, which matters if a tiny keypad would put you off using it at all.
Can you use a label maker on school uniform?
DYMO lists iron-on fabric tapes in the LetraTag range, so yes for uniform and kit bags. Check the cassette says iron-on before you buy.
Which label tape should I use in the fridge or bathroom?
DYMO sells paper and clear plastic LetraTag tapes; plastic is the sensible choice anywhere damp. Keep paper for dry shelves and files.
What should I label first?
Whatever you search for most: medicine, batteries, chargers, the spare loo roll. Five labels this week beats fifty one day.
Is there a free alternative to a label maker?
Masking tape and a thick marker. It looks less tidy but works the same, and you can rewrite it when the contents change.
